Senator Orrin Hatch Asks USINPAC to
Identify Indian Americans for Federal Judgeships
 | USINPAC - Washington, DC |
 | November 21, 2002. |
Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Chairman of
the powerful Senate Judiciary Committee met with a group of Indian Americans in
an event sponsored by the US-India Political Action Committee (USINPAC).
Describing the meeting as one of the "best organized breakfast meetings ever'
Senator Hatch stated that 'USINPAC is performing a very important and much
needed role in getting Indian Americans involved in the US political process".
Senator Hatch said that he was deeply honored to kick off the USINPAC 'Breakfast
on the Hill' series and was very grateful for the generous support from the
Indian American community. Welcoming the Indian American community's growing
involvement in shaping public policy through organizations such as USINPAC,
Senator Hatch stated that Indian Americans should "continue to get involved in
the process, continue to break down barriers and reach out to political leaders
in both political parties." He emphasized that this involvement need not be on a
partisan basis. Lauding USINPAC's role in educating lawmakers on the issues of
concern to the Indian American community, Senator Hatch stated that lawmakers do
not know enough about the Indian American community.
He asked USIPAC to let him know about
suitable Indian American candidates for Federal judgeships to increase their
representation in the Federal judiciary. He will strive to get Indian Americans
appointed to positions in the judicial and executive branches of the government.
Describing Indo-US relations, Senator Hatch
stated that, "If there are two countries for whom it is natural to work
together, then they are the United States and India". Senator Hatch indicated
that he would support a US-India free trade agreement and ask the United States
Trade Representative, Robert Zoellick, to investigate strengthening Indo-US
bilateral business relations through such an agreement. Senator Hatch also
supported giving greater access to Indian biotechnology firms to the US market.
The group of Indian Americans comprised of
entrepreneurs and business leaders. One of the attendees, Mr. Natwar Gandhi,
Chief Financial Officer for the District of Columbia commented that, " USINPAC
is off to a fast start and is already winning friends and influencing people on
Capitol Hill. The kickoff 'Breakfast on the Hill' with Senator Orrin Hatch
confirms the interest and importance of this group. I very much look forward to
working with USINPAC in future events including the upcoming Breakfast with
Senator Grassley. USINPAC will help to ensure that Indian-Americans are properly
represented in key political forums and have a seat at the table". Mr. Rakesh
Gupta, Chairman and Co-Founder, TechBooks, said "USINPAC provides an excellent
forum for Indian Americans to get engaged in the public policy development
process. The breakfast meeting with Senator Hatch provided a wonderful
opportunity to have a direct dialogue with a key decision maker about the issues
that our important to the Indian American community."
The US-India Political Action Committee (USINPAC),
a bipartisan political action committee promoting the interests of the Indian
American community, today kicked off a series of breakfast meetings on Capitol
Hill. The objective of these meetings, termed as "Breakfast on the Hill", is to
acquaint leading senators and congressmen of both parties with issues relevant
to the Indian American community.
Participants in the "Breakfast on the Hill"
are Indian American businesses, professionals and activists who have
demonstrated a strong desire and ability to raise the profile of the Indian
American community. The goal is to create opportunities for Indian Americans to
advance their political, business, economic and social agendas in partnership
with the nation's elected officials and policymakers. USINPAC draws from a large
pool of Indian American entrepreneurs, industry leaders, professionals,
thinkers, activists and others who have volunteered to act on behalf of the
community and the nation.
Building upon its successful meeting with
Senator Hatch, USINPAC will honor Senator Chuck Grassley, the incoming Chairman
of the powerful Senate Finance Committee, at its next breakfast meeting on
December 18. These breakfast meetings are structured to facilitate a better
understanding of the Indian American community and its interests, as well as the
interests of the nation.
Commenting on its latest initiative, Sanjay
Puri, USINPAC Executive Director, said, "The Indian American community is ready
to contribute in a meaningful way to the social and political process in the
country, and USINPAC is ready and willing to advance that agenda." Mr. Puri also
stated that USINPAC is proud to have supported, and contributed to, several
election campaigns nationwide during the 2002 election cycle.
USINPAC intends to strengthen Indian
American interests by implementing a model that leverages regional initiatives
of Indian Americans nationwide on a bipartisan basis. It adds value by
supporting and financially contributing to fund-raisers nationally, and
sharpening the message on Capitol Hill through its various initiatives.

LETTER FROM SENATOR
LIEBERMAN TO THE MEMBERS OF USINPAC
Dear Friends:
The strength of the United States has always
come from its diversity. Its diversity comes from its immigrant communities. We
are a strong nation, a unified nation, because of our diversity.
One of our nation's most important and
fastest growing immigrant communities is the Indian American Community. It is
two million plus strong and growing. Approximately 10% of the medical students
in this country are Indian American. One out of four high tech businesses in the
San Francisco Bay Area is Indian American owned. The American landscape is full
of Indian entrepreneurs who create economic growth and opportunity as small
businessmen and -women. Indian Americans have the highest per capita income of
any ethnic minority at $68,000. In short, Indian Americans are a success story.
It is time to translate that economic power
into political clout. Indian Americans must be in the forefront of shaping
domestic and international policy for the United States. They have earned a seat
at the policy table, and the country will be better off for their participation
in policy debates in Washington and beyond.
For instance, Indian Americans have unique
insight into US-Indian relations. The community's desire to expand economic
relations, particularly trade could be a win/win situation for both nations. The
community's desire to bolster US-Indian strategic relations is also an important
contribution, particularly as it relates to non-proliferation and anti-terrorism
issues. It is also time to seriously consider increasing
the permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council. As the world's
largest democracy, India should be a priority candidate for a permanent seat.
But beyond international relations, we must
look to improve things domestically for Indian Americans. Of course, we must
fight any and all discrimination against Indian Americans wherever we may find
it. But that is not enough. We must also actively create opportunities for
Indian Americans to serve in high level positions in government. As President, I
will see that this is the case.
I also oppose any efforts to eliminate or
diminish the H1-B visa program. Why do we want to limit or otherwise handicap a
community that has made such significant and important contributions to this
country? It is counter-intuitive and counter-productive.
In closing, my Administration will be
proactive in working with the Indian American community on international and
domestic issues. I will make certain that Indian Americans have positions of
responsibility in my Administration because it is good for our country, and it
is the right thing to do.
Sincerely,
Joe Lieberman
Kerry's Platform Statements
George W Bush has chosen tax cuts for the wealthy and
special favors for the special interests over our economic future. John Kerry’s
priority will be middle class families who are working hard to cover the
mortgage, pay the high cost of health care, child care and tuition, or just
trying to get ahead.
The first thing John Kerry will do is fight his heart out to bring back the
three million jobs that have been lost under George W. Bush. He will fight to
restore the jobs lost under Bush in the first 500 days of his administration.
Kerry has proposed creating jobs through a new manufacturing jobs credit, by
investing in new energy industries, restoring technology, and stopping layoffs
in education

John Kerry believes that America needs
immigration policies that are fair and safe. The United States is a
diverse nation built by people from all parts of the world who are here
because they believe in freedom, democracy, and justice. Immigration is
central to our nation’s history, as almost all of us are immigrants or the
descendants of immigrants. At the same time, John Kerry believes the
federal government must secure our borders so that terrorists do not use
our immigration system as a means to enter the country and do us harm.

LETTER FROM SENATOR KERRY
TO THE MEMBERS OF USINPAC
November 13, 2003
Dear Friends:
I am delighted to have this opportunity to
share my views and my vision with the Indian-American community. The importance
of this election cannot be overstated. George Bush has taken our country down
the wrong path in nearly every conceivable way. As president, I will make
America safer, stronger and more prosperous. I will nurture the important
relationship between the United States and India and ensure that the rights of
Indian-Americans are protected here at home.
I have long supported a closer relationship
between the United States and India -- democracies that share many ideals, and
face common challenges. I believe it is important, to both the United States and
to India, that the economic and military relationship between our two countries
continue to grow. As President, I will continue the combined naval and special
forces exercises our governments have undertaken. The threat of international
terrorism affects both the United States and India. And the fight against
terrorism requires a mix of military, diplomatic and law enforcement responses.
I strongly believe that the United States and India must continue to work
together to bolster our joint capacities. The development of bilateral and
multilateral working groups is crucial.
Bi-lateral engagement between India and
Pakistan is important to resolving the dispute in Kashmir, and to combating
terrorism. I believe the United States has the unique ability to help this
process along, and as President I intend to take full advantage of the
opportunity to do so.
Pakistan's support is important to
operations in Afghanistan. Yet it is my hope that Pakistan will always remember
that our goal is to have free nations with open societies in which there is no
place for terror or the support of terror. Pakistan has much to gain from
internal reform, and I stand eager to foster and support this process.
Indian-Americans deserve a President who
will fight to better their lives here at home. In the wake of September 11, many
Indian Americans were the victims of hate crimes. I am an original cosponsor of
Federal hate crimes legislation. While most state and local police and
prosecutors are vigilant in investigating and prosecuting hate crimes, we need a
backup system to assure that every hate crime is properly vindicated. As
President, I will ensure that the Hate Crimes Act is properly enforced by the
Justice Department and that there are appropriate resources for the training of
state and local officials in identifying, solving and prosecuting these crimes
at the state level.
Many Indian Americans are understandably
concerned about their civil liberties. The Bush-Ashcroft Justice Department has
thrown basic civil liberties out the window in their efforts to make Americans
feel safer, while doing little to actually make them safer. I favor giving law
enforcement the tools it needs to prevent, investigate and prosecute terrorism,
but I also favor assuring that there is appropriate Court and Congressional
oversight over the use of these powerful tools.
I believe that America needs immigration
policies that are fair and safe. The United States is a diverse nation built by
people from all parts of the world who came here because they believed in
freedom, democracy, and justice. I will work to cut the backlog of applications
pending with the Bureau for Citizenship and Immigration Services, speed up the
naturalization process and reduce the wait for family visas and other important
matters. I believe that we should make family reunification the cornerstone of
our immigration system.
Please visit my website- www.johnkerry.com-
to learn more about my campaign. I would be deeply honored to have your support
as I fight to move our country forward.
Sincerely,
John F. Kerry

Subject: [H1BClassAction] Left Hook for the India
Caucus
I attended a meeting of a group of unions here in the
Seattle area last week The meeting was sponsored by the American Federation of
Government Employees and was titled "A Congressional Innvestigation-outsourcing
and privitization of government jobs". There were more than 13 different
labor orginizations and unions present in the Seattle Labor Temple and I
estimated the crowd to be at least 350 people.
The primary reason I was attending was to hand out
literature for a presidential canidate and to listen to the speakers and find
out how much of what has been going on in the "american worker replacement
program" is known outside the software profession. My wife and I got there
nice and early and sat right next to the microphone in the center aisle ( I
wasnt going to miss a chance to make a statement ).
And as the platform started to fill up My wife nudges me
and says "those guys up there in the suits are WA Reps Jay Inslee and
Jim McDermott. I thought I had died and
gone to heaven. My wife was literally shaking with rage next
to me and I had to hold her hand to keep her from rushing to the stage and
"b***h slapping" the two of them. To my astonishment two more congressional
members from Washingtons "India Caucus" sat down at the side of the other two.
My wife said very loudly, so that they could hear her, "Its Murderers
Row up there".
As the presentation started each of the Congressmen was
asked to give two minutes on how they stood on the "outsourcing issue". Each
of these bald faced ****** were met with warm applause except for two very
loud people booing and yelling "liar" and "traitor" (any guesses who that was
?). Within five minutes three of the four left the building without saying a
word. I won't go into the program but I will say it was speeches by 10
different union and policy people on the effects of "outsourcing" on the
services and quality of government. It concluded with a question and answer
period. I jumped to the microphone and was the first one in line. The
following is what my wife and I have concluded was the exchange that followed
:
Hello, My name is ################### and I am a blacklisted engineer in
Seattle Washington. On behalf of the 2.5 million software engineers and it
professionals how have lost thier jobs to oustsourcng and the even more
insidious insourcing, the use of H1b, J1 and L1 visas, I would like to
welcome you to the wonderful world of the american worker replacement program.
These things have been going on for over five years now and the model is in
place and it works. They tested it on my profession first and they found that
they can destroy any labor force that can be created. It is too late to stop
it, it is too profitable and fits too well into the Corporatacracy that has
replaced democracy.
...................absolute dead silence in the room..
I only have one question for you Congressman Mc Dermott.
How in God's name can you stand here in this room and tell these hopeful
people that you care about thier lives and jobs or even care about
this country when you belong to an organization that is directly responsible
for the giving away of over 2.5 million high paying technical jobs in
the last four years...when We have congressman like Jay Inslee going to India
and making statments like "we aren't going do anything to stop
outsourcing of American jobs" and "americans don't add value
anymore".............
................the sound of 300 people sucking air
through their clenched teeth..............
How can you stand there and pretend you care at all about
any working Americans ?
Cgrs. McDermott.
(looking down at the table, turning red at the ears and neck, shuffles
papers.....looks like one of your kids that got caught doing something really
bad)
Mumbles.........."India has 3 billion people and
Nuclear weapons"
I yell...."if you are giving my job away for national security...then I expect
to be compensated"
Cgrs.McDermott
"well back when there was shortage"
My wife cuts him off with........"You are a Goddamn Liar" I yell "that is a
lie and you know it... you have read and heard testimony in congress from Dr.
Norm Matloff and yet you stand there and lie to these people" "I am not going
down like Kevin Flanigan congressman, I am not !"
[Kevin Flanigan is the programmer from Bank of
America, CA that committed suicide in the bank parking lot]
At that point there is absolute dead silence in this room.
We just handed this ****** a serious public humiliation
and he knew it.
I will give the rest of the story and the responses i got from various
congressman and union leaders over the next few days.
Keep up the fight, we are winning !

Message from AARP New York’s State President
 |
|
AARP New York worked hard in 2002 to show that we truly have "The power to
make it better." By combining our resources with thousands of volunteers,
members and community partners, we stepped up to our obligation to prove that by
working together, we can make a difference.
Because of AARP's advocacy efforts, the Governor signed a law that protects
homeowners from predatory lenders. Also, all energy customers, whether they use
a public or private energy company, now have equal consumer protections because
of legislation which was passed unanimously by the legislature and then signed
into law by the Governor.
In 2003, we will continue our commitment to enacting positive social change
by bringing attention to other important issues affecting older New Yorkers. As
we face a massive deficit in the New York State budget, we are concerned about
possible cuts to vital services and programs for seniors, including the EPIC
program.
Our constituents tell us there are other issues that concern them. We will
work towards getting oversight for assisted living facilities, improving the
quality of care in nursing homes, providing grandparents raising grandchildren
certain legal rights, and protecting those who wish to pre-plan their funerals.
AARP's legislative success will be felt by many people, on many levels -
aging parents, adult children, grandchildren and other family members. I am
certain that by joining forces and working together, we truly have "The power to
make it better" to improve the lives of older New Yorkers.
